Understanding the Importance of Cleaning Eyes Every Day

Maintaining eye hygiene is often forgotten. Unconsciously exposed to dust, dirt, or other foreign matter, which can interfere with vision and daily activities. When should the eyes be cleaned?

The eye is a very complex organ and is equipped with parts created specifically to protect it from exposure to dust, dirt, or other foreign matter. Even so, these foreign objects may still enter the eye and cause its function to be disrupted. Exposure to foreign objects can make the eyes become irritated and become red, can even cause inflammation in the eye. Safe Ways to Clean Eyes

  • First, wash your hands with soap and water. Before cleaning your eyes, make sure you have removed contact lenses when using them.
  • Then, clean the dust, dirt, or other foreign objects that enter your eye by flowing clean water that is dripped slowly into the eye.
  • Another way that can be done is to soak your eyes using eye bath cups, cups, or small containers filled with water. Then lower your face and point the eye bath cup filled with water to the problematic eye. When the eyes are submerged, make open and closed movements of the eyes repeatedly to remove dirt or foreign matter that is trapped inside the eye.
In addition to the independent handling above, everyday you can also clean your eyes using eye wash liquid. Eye wash liquid can help remove foreign matter or chemicals from the surface of the eye, and relieve symptoms of eye disorders, such as red, sore, or itchy eyes. One of the eyewash liquids commonly used to clean the eye is an eyewash containing witch hazel. Besides helping to clean the eyes, this substance is also able to relieve irritation or inflammation, so that the eyes will feel cool, fresh, and return to functioning properly. However, it is recommended to avoid using eye wash liquid containing preservatives such as Benzalkonium chloride, because of the research found adverse effects for the eyes. If you choose to use eye wash liquid, choose a product that has been registered with the BPOM (Food and Drug Monitoring Agency) to ensure its safety. Certain eye wash liquid products also have halal certification, so they can be widely used by the public. So, never rub, scratch, or clean your eyes with your hands, especially in dirty conditions. It actually risks causing irritation to the eye getting worse. If the complaint is very annoying or does not improve, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist, so that appropriate treatment can be given.
